| JackFlash by Brayder Technologies, is a program that can save you from needing a new Palm. JackFlash will give your Palm more memory, thus allowing you to run all those programs that were really beginning to make the memory of your Palm rather cramped. JackFlash uses the unused space in the flash ROM, which, depending on the variety of Palm you have and the operating system version it contains, can mean from 0K of additional memory in a Palm VII with OS 3.2, to 1727K in the Palm m500 series! There are certain PalmOS devices that cannot use JackFlash, including all Handspring Visors, all Sony Clies and some IBM WorkPads. The reason for this is that they either do not have Flash ROM or all the Flash ROM is in use already. Now you don’t just get your original memory and the flash memory as well, and there are a couple of caveats involved but with proper management, JackFlash can be very useful. To use JackFlash, you move programs or and databases from RAM to Flash ROM, freeing up the space in the RAM of your Palm and allowing you to install other programs you did not have room for before. Should you wish, you can move them back again. Think of the Flash ROM as being a sort of second hard drive on your computer. As Flash memory is read only, you would be wise to install programs only as some of the databases used by applications need to be written to and could cause you to have problems with their use. The biggest “problem” that you need to be aware of when using JackFlash is that items stored in Flash ROM are not backed up when performing a HotSync and must be moved to RAM if you want them backed up. JackSafe is an optional utility that comes with JackFlash which allows you to access applications and databases stored in Flash after a battery failure or a hard reset without using the HotSync function first to reinstall JackFlash. JackFlash works well without JackSafe, it just means that the contents of Flash will not be visible after a battery failure until you install JackFlash again. You only need to use this utility once. You do not need to remove JackFlash from your Palm handheld before installing JackSafe. JackFlash has been most reliable on my Palm IIIc and I have not encountered any problems with its use. I would recommend it to any one who has a Palm that can use it. |
