It Came from the Heat
A horror short
by Rob BowenIt was a hot muggy day in July. The air was full of moisture and the clouds were ready to burst. I was on my way to pick up my AC window unit, and on a day like that it was going to be needed. I picked up the AC unit and started home. On my way home I saw something that I needed to write down for future reference. I pulled out my Palm Pilot and to my horror the screen had a crack all the way from the calculator button to the menu button.
Time slowed within the cabin of the car while outside time seemed to speeding up at a tremendous rate. I can honestly say that I felt sick to my stomach. I had no choice, but to pull over and recover from the horrifying experience.
Having only had the unit for a couple of months and because I wasn't sure if I could afford to fix it, I had to take stock of my uses for the unit. Of course the pro's far outweighed the cons so I went ahead and fixed it. Keating Tech. was very understanding and gave me an excellent price on a new screen.
To this day I do not know how the screen cracked. I wasn't the person lifting the AC unit and I know that I did not bump into anything. Anyway, I am happy to say that Palm and owner are doing fine. A little over protective perhaps, but happy nonetheless.
