Attendance

This month, we had 5 members at the Wednesday meeting and 11 members at the Saturday meeting.

Geoff Edgecomb is selling two PalmPilot Professionals in hopes of getting a Palm IIIx.

Roy Caban asked if there were going to be more CanadaPUG.com web pages available for the AvantGo application. Sean was pleased to answer in the affirmative. The additional pages will be part of the work he is doing on the new website.

As most everyone should have received an invitation to view the BetaSite and present Sean with comments; Sean is in the throws of revamping the CanadaPUG.com website. The BetaSite that you were asked to view http://www.canadapug.com/BetaSite and the current Live site http://www.canadapug.com will be combined to present a new clean easy to view website that smooth and easy to navigate through. EDITOR'S NOTE: The beta site has now been moved to the real site and is up and running.  Please send your comments to Sean.

Topics

As usual the beginning of the meeting was an open forum for members to talk to each other and exchange ideas and experiences.

Our newest member, Roy Caban, mentioned that his five year old daughter has begun to catch the Palm bug. She has used it to create some master drawings with a doodle pad application. Watch out Roy! You're going to have to get her a Palm of here very own. She will love it and feed it and call it George.

Ron Apperley will be departing on a multiple week driving/cycling vacation out to the West Coast. He is of course taking his Palm Pilot Professional along for the trip. He will be corresponding via e-mail and will be updating a website with images and written experiences of his travels. The website that he will be updating is his own and will require a password to access the travel portion. Can anyone guess what the password might be? Nope that's not it, OK it is. It will be canadapug. Ron's website is http://www.disktributing.com and his address for e-mail is ronapperley@disktributing.com. Now since this will be a cycling journey as well as a driving one; Ron decided to purchase a functional, yet still playful, add on to his Pilot. He picked up the attachable compass (http://www.handheldinterfaces.com) and accompanying map overlays (available on the WEB). Good luck to Ron on his tour de West. Take those mountain trials (I do mean trials not trails) easy Ron.

Three of our members (Sam Peralta, Russell Scheer and Kevin Maynard) are the creators of the company Qvadis and are close to releasing a Beat version of the application they have been working on. Their website has now been furnished with content and ready to be viewed. It can be found at http://www.qvadis.com. Check it out.

Oh! As usual the Palm VII was mentioned. Yadda, yadda, flip the antenna to turn on, yadda yadda, read e-mail. You know the same old same old. Talking about it isn't quite as much fun as playing with one. Ever since Alan brought in the PDQ it really doesn't hold any water to talk about the VII anymore, but when one of our members walks in with one! Watch out.

A couple of methods for HotSyncing to Outlook 98 were discussed when Sean mentioned his use of Outlook98 as his desktop. Sean uses the PocketMirror that comes with the Palm IIIx and Roy Caban indicated that he uses a product called "Desktop To Go" to Hot Sync to Outlook. As mentioned PocketMirror comes bundled with the Palm IIIx and Palm V.  Desktop To Go is a third party conduit. Both Sean and Roy sang the praises of using Outlook98 as their desktop, but you'll have to ask them about all the different uses.

Paul D'Auvergne found out that the L.A. Fire Department now uses Palm Connected Organizers on their investigations.  A nice little endorsement to the product I would say.

A few other software packages were mentioned. Paul D'Auvergne brought in a sheet on a new Graffiti writing application called QuickWriting. It uses a quadrant & sub-quadrant system to create a method of writing without the need to lift the stylus off the screen for each letter. The idea is to increase the speed with which one writes. It looks promising, but everyone noticed that there would be a steep learning curve for one to get used to the writing format

Roy Caban spoke about a document creating package that will make readable file from desktop word processing packages and spreadsheet packages. The application is called "Documents To Go" and the files that it makes can also be read via AportisDoc and SmartDoc.

Kevin Maynard asked about voice recognition software for the Pilot. Sean mentioned the Palm Parrot by Pilot Island. It comes as a piece of hardware that attaches the same way as the compass and modem. More information is available on their website.

Sean brought a laptop with the newest version of the Palm Emulator so that he could demo two of the applications that were part of the topics for this months meeting. The emulator is available on the 3Com website.

The first software package that was demonstrated was MyTapes & Discs.

The next was Quik Budget.

Sean also spoke about Qmate; a Palm companion for Quicken and Microsoft Money.
